Building a Simple 3-Step Skincare Routine for Acne-Prone Skin

By Josephine Adobea Adjei

Why Most Routines Fail Acne-Prone Skin

The most common mistake is doing too much. Stacking 6–8 products without understanding what each one does leads to irritation, more breakouts, and confusion about what's actually working.

For acne-prone skin — especially in Ghana's humid climate — simplicity and consistency beat complexity every time.

The 3 Steps That Actually Matter

Step 1: Cleanse (Twice Daily)

Your cleanser's job is to remove sweat, excess oil, sunscreen, and environmental debris without stripping your skin barrier.

What we recommend: COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser

At pH 5.0 — close to your skin's natural pH — it cleans without disrupting the acid mantle that protects against bacteria.

How to use: Wet your face, apply a small amount, massage gently for 60 seconds, rinse with lukewarm water.

Step 2: Treat (Once Daily, PM)

After cleansing, apply a targeted treatment while your skin is still slightly damp.

What we recommend: The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

Niacinamide reduces sebum production, minimises pores, and fades post-acne marks. Zinc soothes active blemishes. Together, they address the root causes of most adult acne.

How to use: Apply 4–5 drops to the face, pat gently until absorbed. Use every evening after cleansing.

Step 3: Protect (Every Morning)

SPF is non-negotiable. Without it, any dark spots or acne marks you're treating will get darker every day you spend in the sun.

What we recommend: COSRX Ultra Light Invisible Sunscreen SPF 50

No white cast. No heavy finish. Just protection.

How to use: Apply as the last step every morning, 15 minutes before going outside.

What About Moisturiser?

If your skin is oily, you may not need a separate moisturiser — the niacinamide serum provides some hydration. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, add a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser between Step 2 and Step 3.

The Bottom Line

Cleanser → Niacinamide Serum → SPF. Do this consistently for 8 weeks before judging results. Most people see significant improvement in 4–6 weeks.
