What is Niacinamide and Why Does Your Skin Need It?

By Josephine Adobea Adjei

What is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3 — a water-soluble vitamin that plays multiple roles in keeping skin healthy, balanced, and clear.

Unlike some active ingredients that work by irritating or stripping the skin, niacinamide is gentle enough for daily use on all skin types. It works with your skin, not against it.

What Does it Actually Do?

Controls Oil Production

Niacinamide reduces the amount of sebum (oil) your skin produces. For oily and acne-prone skin types, this means less shine, fewer clogged pores, and smaller-looking pores over time.

Fades Hyperpigmentation

It inhibits the transfer of melanin to skin cells — which is the process that creates dark spots after acne or sun damage. With consistent use (8–12 weeks), visible fading of post-acne marks occurs.

Strengthens the Skin Barrier

Niacinamide boosts the production of ceramides — the lipids that keep moisture in and irritants out. A stronger barrier means less sensitivity, less dehydration, and more resilience.

Reduces Redness and Inflammation

It has anti-inflammatory properties that calm active breakouts and reduce general redness — especially helpful for people with sensitive or reactive skin.

How to Use It

  • When: AM and PM, after cleansing and toning, before heavier moisturisers
  • How much: 4–5 drops applied across the face and patted in gently
  • Concentration: 10% is highly effective — start here
  • Can I mix it? Yes. Niacinamide plays well with most other ingredients. Avoid mixing with high-concentration Vitamin C in the same step (use at different times of day)

Our Recommendation

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% is the most straightforward, affordable, and effective option available. It's one of the few products we recommend to nearly every customer regardless of their primary skin concern.
